In the Forest
In the Forest - 16’10” (2006)

“In The Forest” is my first multimedia piece, for which I created both the video and audio. This is a non-narrative work exploring fall foliage filmed in northwestern Pennsylvania. For me it is a meditation on natural color, motion and sound. The inspiration for the piece came after a year of long daily walks in the woods near our house. After wandering different paths and observing nature I felt relaxed, yet highly conscious of my surroundings and in balance with the natural world around me. I was encompassed so much by the visual impressions that they unlocked spontaneous memories and associations in my mind. I have tried to use digital technology to transform the natural footage and translate that feeling of spontaneous association into this piece.

Most of the percussion sounds in the piece, such as the seashells, rainsticks or tomtoms, were recorded in studio. The cicadas which create the rhythmic layers in the first section were recorded on the island of Hvar in Croatia. The long underlining melodies in the first and last section are a combination of elements from two of my earlier works, a digital piece called “Titania” and the last movement of a string quartet. The center piece of the third movement is a processed sample of my own performance of Schumann's Tr?umerei (Dreaming) from Kinderszenen. I specifically chose this piece because of the composer's intense relationship with nature and the experiences of childhood.
Water I
Water I - 6’16” (2007)

This is a multimedia work intended for display as an installation. It uses video footage from the Northern Coast of the Black Sea at Kaliakra and Rusalka and the audio samples include water, my own voice and percussion instruments. While composing the video, I thought of the piece as a series of paintings with an unified color scheme and subject matter. This is the first piece in a proposed series of video installation pieces.
Il Semaforo Blu
Il Semaforo Blu - 7’19” (2002)

This project started with my interest in a painting entitled Thermodynamik (1994) by German artist Sigmar Polke and a favorite childhood story, Il Semaforo Blu (1976), by Italian author Gianni Rodari. In the story, a traffic light begins blinking blue and the author indicates that perhaps the blue light is special, but most people believe it to be simply malfunctioning. The question is one of how you perceive the world and difference.

The music for this piece is based upon three concrete sounds: traffic recorded in Milan, chimes and water/rain drops. These sounds were then processed using a variety of filters, reverb, phase vocoder and other techniques found primarily in Cmix and RTcmix. The animation was done in collaboration with Fang Zhao from University of Cincinnati DAAP using Flash and Photoshop.
